Bringing Heart Care Closer to Every Island Home
In partnership with the Universal Foundation, Tiny Hearts of Maldives has launched a nationwide Community-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation programme — bringing specialized cardiac care directly to islands across the Maldives.
## Bringing Heart Care Closer to Every Island Home
Imagine having to board a speedboat, navigate rough seas, and find temporary lodging in Malé just to get routine cardiac therapy. For thousands of people living across the Maldivian atolls, this isn't a hypothetical scenario; it is a challenging reality. While our country's unique geography is breathtakingly beautiful, it has historically created massive hurdles for anyone managing a long-term chronic condition like heart disease.
That is exactly why we are incredibly proud to share a major milestone in our mission to protect Maldivian hearts. In partnership with the Universal Foundation, Tiny Hearts of Maldives has officially launched a nationwide, one-year **Community-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation (CBCR) programme**.
### Decentralizing Specialized Care
The core philosophy behind this initiative is simple but profound: **specialized healthcare should not depend on your geography.** Instead of forcing patients to travel long distances for care, we are bringing the expertise directly to their islands.
Over the next year, this programme will focus on training local healthcare professionals, physiotherapists, and fitness counselors at the island level. By equipping these local heroes with specialized knowledge in secondary cardiovascular prevention, we are creating a localized safety net. Patients recovering from heart events or living with chronic conditions will finally have access to regular, structured rehabilitation right where they live, surrounded by their families.
### Tackling the Root Causes
Cardiovascular disease remains a leading health challenge in our communities. While emergency medical interventions are vital, true long-term victory lies in what happens after a diagnosis. A massive component of the CBCR programme is focused on lifestyle modification.
Our local teams will work hand-in-hand with residents to manage the major contributors to heart disease — developing sustainable, heart-healthy nutrition plans using locally available ingredients, designing safe structured exercise routines tailored to individual health levels, and providing education and support to manage everyday risks like high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.
### A Healthier Tomorrow, Together
By focusing on secondary prevention, we are not just treating a disease — we are helping our aunts, uncles, grandparents, and neighbors reclaim their quality of life. This programme represents a shift from reactive medicine to proactive, community-led wellness.
We owe a massive thank you to the Universal Foundation for sharing this vision and investing in the health of our islands. True heart care starts at home, and with the CBCR programme, we are making sure that no matter which atoll you call home, your heart is looked after.
